This gets a big laugh from me! When I was a very wee lass, my parents used to think my Swedish Chef impersonation was hilarious and I was commanded to perform it for their friends. I love that people look at things like this. :)

Thank you for taking time to read and comment! :-) A filled pause is a pause filled by sound, such as "eem" and "er". A pregnant pause is used as an expression for a pause that is used e.g. in comedy and rhetoric. The pause is used actively to create suspense etc. There is a little on pregnant pauses in the article on comic timing in Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comic_timing

Hi ...and good luck with your essay and your new courses. I stumbled on your blog and found your topic for your essay fascinating. I'd like to ask you; as you refer to a 'filled pause' - is it the same as a 'pregnant pause' ?

New Zealand possibly; Dr. Gail Gillon is doing some great research in phonological disorders/apraxia and read/written disorders in NZ children.

Of course I feel bound to English speaking countries by the fact that I only speak English :( But I would LOVE to possibly get to Europe as well. My boyfriend spent a bit of time in Norway and says he would love to get back to a Scandinavian country. He claims I could do graduate work in Norway or Sweden; I am skeptical. :D
